What is Nitrogen?

A highly reactive atom.

Can explode like dynamite.

Needed for life

Our active immune system is based on nitrogen
Soil nitrogen is bound to a carbon by plants
plants bind nitrogen with the aid of sunshine <photosynthesis>
Animals cannot bind nitrogen to carbon

Nitrogen + carbon can be in two forms
  • bound-nitrogen; protein
  • free-nitrogen, available to the immune system
Animals can store bound-nitrogen in protein
Animals cannot store free-nitrogen
We must ingest nitrogen daily for immune function.
Urea and hydroxy-urea are free-nitrogen, never make proteins

Nitrogen is like an explosive gun powder that cells use to kill germs.
